2025 Projected to Be Worst Year on Record for Airplane Seat-to-Booty Size Ratios

St. Louis, MO — A report from the International Airline Comfort Association (IACA) has revealed that 2025 is on track to see an unprecedented mismatch between airplane seat dimensions and average booty size, sparking fears of widespread discomfort and cabin chaos.

The study shows that economy seat widths, which averaged 18 inches in 1970, have shrunk to a paltry 16 inches on most major airlines today. Meanwhile, the average hip circumference of U.S. adults has increased from 37 inches in 1990 to 42 inches in 2024, with projections suggesting an all-time high of 43.2 inches by mid-2025.

“This is a crisis of geometry,” said IACA analyst Deborah Klein. “By 2025, 62% of passengers will physically overlap the armrests of standard economy seats. Seat widths are shrinking to maximize profits, while humanity’s collective derrière continues to thrive, thanks to sedentary lifestyles and the relentless popularity of squats on TikTok.”

Passengers are already sounding the alarm. “I flew to Denver last week, and my hips took up 1.3 seats,” said frequent flier Melissa Conroy, who had to negotiate custody of the shared armrest with her seatmate’s thigh. “By 2025, I’m going to need a row to myself—or I’m going to have to undo my BBL.”

Airlines have shrugged off complaints, citing profit margins. A spokesperson for SkyTight Airlines boasted that their newest planes would feature seats only 15.7 inches wide, dubbing the design “streamlined” and claiming it promotes “cozy, intimate travel experiences.”

“Honestly, with seats this small and hips this wide,” Klein concluded, “your best bet might be teleportation.”
