Seniors Bond Over Grandchildren Who Work In ‘Computers’

SUN CITY, AZ — A group of local seniors at the Silver Horizons Retirement Community has discovered a profound connection: their grandchildren all work in something called "computers."

“It’s just so nice to have someone to talk to about this,” said Margaret Hensley, 78, as she adjusted her pickleball visor. “My grandson Kyle is works in computers. Or on computers? Either way, he’s doing something with them.”

Fellow resident Roger Whitaker, 82, nodded in understanding. “My granddaughter, Lisa, she’s also in computers,” he said with pride. “She told me she’s a ‘software engineer,’ which I think means she wears a lab coat while putting floppy disks into a mainframe. It’s just so impressive.”

The group meets every Thursday in the community center’s multipurpose room, where they swap stories about their grandchildren’s mysterious careers. Topics range from "the cloud" (which many believe is some version of AOL) to something called “coding,” which they have all watched ‘The Matrix’ together to understand batter.

“I asked my grandson Ryan what exactly he does,” said Dolores Franklin, 81. “He said he ‘writes JavaScript for front-end development.’”

Despite their shared enthusiasm, occasional disagreements arise. Last week, an argument broke out when Fred Donovan, 85, insisted his grandson “works in cyber” while Martha Jenkins, 79, countered that hers “does IT,” which the group could not confirm were different things.

As the meeting wrapped up, members collectively agreed that whatever their grandchildren do in computers is “very important,” “probably makes a good living,” and “should involve calling more often.”

The group is now working on a plan to pool their knowledge to buy stock in “Microsoft, or maybe Google—whichever one Steve Jobs founded.”
